My name is Naomi Keefe and I am 11 years old. I am writing this letter to protest against the installation of a new concrete batch plant, operated by Redi-Mix, on Barbadoes Pond on the Dover/Madbury town line.
As a current resident of Grandview Drive across from Barbadoes Pond, the number of reasons is very immense on why the concrete plant should not be constructed. Firstly, it is a great environmental hazard. Occupants of Grandview Drive would no longer be able to swim, fish, or boat in the pond. Our neighborhood has a beautiful selection of wildlife and vegetation and the concrete plant would eliminate much of this.
Secondly, the concrete plant can cause lung problems from dust and other debris. The ingredients in concrete are sand, gravel, cement and water. Sand and gravel dust contains a large amount of quartz which has been shown to cause silicosis. Silicosis is a progressive disorder that can be disabling and sometimes fatal. This is just one of the many health issues.
Lastly, the installation of a concrete plant will create a tremendous increase in traffic. The estimate Redi-Mix has presented is about 160 truck passes per day. That means a concrete truck will pass by not only the houses on route 9, but the neighborhoods adjoining it, about once every 3 minutes. The plant would operate year-round, excluding Sundays, and has proposed a 50-year life span. The current sand and gravel reserves are plentiful enough for ten years only and when that time is up, there will be another portion of trucks coming to and fro daily.
After reading this letter, for just a minute put yourself in my shoes, what would you do?
Sincerely,
Naomi Keefe

Somehow I find it hard to believe that an 11 year old penned this letter...
Perhaps, but did you know that at age 11 pilot Victoria Van Meter became the youngest girl ever to fly across the United States.
That at 11 years old Earl Vickers won the Grand Prize trophy in his 6th grade science fair for a totally bogus theory of atomic structure. The next year he disproved his own theory, but only won Honorable Mention.
That at 11 years old Jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
That at 11 years old Orchestra members wept at the musical skill and insight displayed by Yehudi Menuhin as he performed Beethoven's Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic.
That at 11 years old Country singer, songwriter and actress Dolly Parton made her first radio appearance.
That at 11 years old Buddy Rich was leading his own band.
That at 11 years old Pianist Mendelssohn performed his first original compositions.
That at 11 years old Shostakovich performed Bach's entire Well-Tempered Clavier.
Did you? 11 year olds are capable of amazing things, and I believe this 11 year old wrote this letter, and so did the Foster's Daily Democrat Newspaper who also republished this letter (but they fixed her spelling mistakes...) http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070921/FOSTERS05/709210001/-1/services0511
It doesnt matter if the writer is 11 or 110 years old! Fact of the matter remains that it appears that many counties in this wonderful country could care less about the people that live there, since it is the businesses there that provide them with higher tax dollars
